Road trip #1

We're on our way to the farm at Juiz de Flora.

The coach journey is pretty spectacular; we snaked through a huge mountain pass, with a massive drop to our left, and crazy jungle village cliff type things to our right. Think Colonel Kurtz's camp, but with pretty blankets for sale by the side of the road instead of heads on sticks. 3 hours of relentless scenery is a lot to take in. Wow.

Also, there appears to be a place nearby called eletronica, which is pretty cool. So I'm obviously listening to Boards of Canada right now.

I think we're nearly there.

I'm ready for the buffalo.

Salami sandwiches

We've ordered loads of furniture and appliances for the apartment, so this week I'm mostly going to be lying around he apartment playing the role of lil suzi homemaker. Which suits me fine; I'd be more than happy to sit around in my pants and eat salami sandwiches for the rest of my life.

Nipped out to the supermarket earlier to grab a couple of things, and ended up chatting briefly to some couple who asked me for the time. I haven't really spoken much since ive arrived, and I didnt quite hear them when they first asked, so my automatic reaction was to panic, shrug the shoulders and fire off a "desculpe, mas não entendi" in their general direction. I don't expect this to be the last time I say it.

It really struck me how feckin lucky I am to be here on the way home from the market. Not everyone can say that they can see one of the 7 new wonders of the world towering over them when they nip out to buy some milk. Jeebas saves!

Jardim Botanico

First impressions

My first impressions of the city are exactly as I had expected: overwhelmingly positive. The taxi ride from the airport to the apartment was crazy; I knew I'd end up having a few princess diana moments but I didn't expect these to come so soon. This guy had a death wish, the mental bitch. Still, it was fun to race around the streets and see the imposing lights from the surrounding favelas look down on us. And Jeebas too, of course.

Our apartment is excellent. Hugo chose well, as I knew he would. The rooms are a little noisy, but this is something I think I'll get used to quite quickly. I haven't had any trouble sleeping so far.

The place is pretty empty at the minute; the only real furniture we have is a bed. We'll go soon to hugo's uncle's farm and choose our bits and pieces from what Hugo has stored there. I'm looking forward to the road trip, if only for the promise of buffalos.

The outdoor communal area for our apartment is utterly fantastic. I expect I'll spend a lot of time out there, at least at the beginning. The swimming pool is clean, there's plenty of places to sit and eat, drink and read, and there's even a football pitch with a mountainous jungle backdrop behind one of the nets. Goals McGuigan smells blood.

The view from our bedroom is also pretty spectacular. We're on the seventh floor, looking down on to the Rua das Laranjeiras. The traffic is constant, and every third vehicle is a yellow taxi. The centerpiece is the huge mountain towering over the apartments. I'm not sure which one it is, but we can also see Corcovado (jeebas' hill) from the street just outside the front gate, and from what i've seen of the neighbourhood so far, we've chosen a great spot to begin our adventure here.

Yesterday we went to the botanic gardens. Hugo was excited to bring me here and he had mentioned it many times before. I can see why; the place is beautiful. I can see myself going back there a lot, to read, look at the cactus village, and hunt for lizards and monkeys.

After the gardens, we went our for our first churrascaria, at porcao rios in flamengo. The flow of meat was relentless. Just the way I like it.

Today we're going to do some Internet shopping for various appliances we need for the apartment. I've never bought an oven before. Does this mean I'm now officially an adult?

And so the south american adventure begins.

It's about an hour until I land in rio, and my head is spinning with excitement and mild turbulence. I can't wait to see Hugo again.

The flight is certainly not as difficult to endure as I thought that it would be. That's as long as it doesn't crash in the next 45 minutes. I expect hill Jeebas won't let that happen though.

Thanks to my advanced technological on the go lifestyle, I've been able to watch films, listen to the sounds of screaming women through my headphones, and download a sleeping app that kinda made me dribble all over my top. Thankfully, the lady next to me is one of those polite ones that you find sometimes, and she didn't say anything or tell on me.

Now it's time to fill in the customs declaration form, and so this is the bit where I'm glad I decided against bringing the vacuum packed Teddy bears. I don't think my Portuguese is up to the level where i could accurately explain the fear in their eyes, frozen in time.

After that I guess I'll be brave enough to open the window screen and hope to see the bright lights of this Cidade marilvelosa. (sic) Let's see if it's what I expect.....
